It feels like spring is taking its sweet time coming into full swing, and while it's easy to get down on these cloudy, cool days, I encourage you to notice the little joys that spring provides. See if you can find happiness in watching the progression of the hills turning green and hearing the call of birds return. Soon enough everything will be in full bloom and the tapping of the woodpeckers will become the norm; we'll forget how wet and cool this spring has been and instead relish in the sun and life abounding.
Though it's not always easy to just flip your perspective and force your mind to change, there are often exercises or activities that can flip the switch for us. Try one of these today to brighten your day:
- Get out for a walk - whether it's sprinkling or cool, once you get out moving your mind and body with love the fresh air and mental reset of being outside
- Look out a window - if getting out for a walk isn't possible, at least look out the window; shifting from a focused view on a screen or page to a panoramic view has immense benefit not just for our eyes, but for your entire nervous system
- Practice gratitude - write down or share with yourself or someone in your life 1-3 things that you are grateful for; when we focus on abundance rather than scarcity our stress response shifts and we create new habits of thinking
- Connect with friends or family - spend quality time with those you love; we are social beings and there is so much mental and emotional benefit to feeling a sense of connection with those in your community
Give one or several of these exercises a try and notice if your mood changes, and as your mood changes notice what other changes cascade from there. Though these exercises may seem small, the changes can be profound. Any time I am feeling a negative spiral of stress or impatience, these are my go-to exercises and their impact is immediate and deeply-rooted. Let me know the tools you use to brighten your mood or how these work for you!
